BJP Ends AAP's Long Reign in Delhi
The political landscape of Delhi has been dramatically reshaped following the 2025 Assembly elections. With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clinching a majority, the city has seen the end of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 11-year rule. In the high-profile New Delhi constituency, AAP’s face and national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, faced a stunning defeat at the hands of BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma. Verma emerged victorious with a lead of 4,089 votes, concluding 14 tense rounds of counting with 18,483 votes against Kejriwal's 14,394. Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit lagged far behind, pulling in just 4,568 votes.
Across the capital, the BJP demonstrated overwhelming strength by winning 37 seats and maintaining leads in 11 others, well past the magic figure of 36 in the 70-seat assembly. The AAP managed to secure only 17 seats and held onto leads in five, marking a significant erosion of its political base. Meanwhile, the Congress didn't manage to secure any leads, continuing its downward trend in the region.
Controversy and Campaign Themes
The election was not just numbers—it was also a rich tapestry of drama and allegations. Arvind Kejriwal alleged that the BJP attempted to win over AAP candidates with hefty offers of ₹15 crore, leading to an inquiry by the Anti-Corruption Branch. These claims added fuel to the already fiery political atmosphere, with BJP leaders dismissing them and focusing on what they termed as ‘development’. Leaders like Parvesh Verma and state president Virendraa Sachdeva continuously highlighted this theme, resonating with a voter base seemingly tired of AAP’s past governance.
The AAP, despite its confidence going into early polls, could not escape what some insiders termed as ‘public fatigue’. This was a sentiment noted by several analysts, who pointed out the general sense of weariness with AAP’s administration. As exit polls had anticipated, the BJP victory was almost wholeheartedly predicted, signifying a return to power in Delhi after nearly thirty years.
The shift indicates a significant change in Delhi's political dynamics, bringing BJP back into the limelight with promises of new initiatives and developments. The AAP now faces the challenge of introspection and realigning itself to once again capture the public’s favor.
